The Mallett Brothers w/ North & South Dakotas at Putnam Den (8:30 PM)
Putnam Den, 63A Putnam Street, Saratoga Springs, NY
The Mallett Brothers Band is a nationally touring alt-country/rock band from Maine. Slightly more rock than country, theirs is a musical melting pot that's influenced equally by folk and singer/songwriter influences as by harder rock, punk and psychedelic sounds. Led by brothers Luke and Will Mallett, the band is rounded out by Brian Higgins on drums, Nick Leen on bass, Matt Mills on lead guitar, pedal steel and banjo, and Wally on dobro and electric guitar. It's song-driven music that holds up under the lens of solitary listening, but that's equally apt to crank a room full of rockers into whiskey-fueled high gear......................... Saratoga's High Peaks Band incorporates Reggae, jazz, blues, calypso, gospel, progressive, classical, funk, jam, rock and folk into a unique blend that is called Smart-Jam.

Lyrically rooted in the singer/songwriter tradition, their soulful words are sung in three-part harmonies reminiscent of both Appalachia and Medieval Europe. Along with a wealth of original songs and traditional ballads, Harpeth loves to experiment with the standards of classic rock, surprising and delighting audiences with fresh renditions of "Stairway to Heaven," "Norwegian Wood" and more. Del Rey at Caffe Lena (7:00 PM)
Caffe Lena at The Grove at Neumann, 233 Lake Avenue Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
Del Rey is a superb entertainer--a hillbilly/smarty-pants/country blues musician with a sense of humor and a manic intensity. She's smart, funny and a true virtuoso of guitar and ukulele. Raised on the music of Sam Chatmon, Lydia Mendoza and Memphis Minnie, Del Rey's guitar playing embraces country blues, stride piano and classic jazz--all filtered through the mind of an autodidact trailor-park aesthete. Now hailed as "one of the greatest modern players of the metal-bodied resonator guitar" (Acoustic Guitar Magazine) she has also taken the humble ukulele to a new level of musicianship, picking out the same complicated, rhythmic blues and ragtime on four strings as she does on six.

Book Signing with James Howard Kunstler: "The Harrows of Spring" (7:00 PM)
Northshire Bookstore, 422 Broadway Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
An evening with renowned social critic, energy expert, and bestselling author James Howard Kunstler, discussing the gripping final novel in his World Made By Hand series.

The Harrows of Spring completes the story of the quaint upstate New York town of Union Grove, thrown into a future world that in many ways resembles the nineteenth century. In Union Grove, early spring is a challenging season, known as the "six weeks want," a time when fresh food is scarce and the winter stores are dwindling. The town is struggling in particular this year as the Hudson River trade route to Albany has been halted by the local plantation tycoon Stephen Bullock, who has deemed it too resource-intensive and is now striving for self-sufficiency. Meanwhile, after returning from his travels around what is left of the United States, Daniel Earle is intent on resurrecting a newspaper for the community, and finds an interesting story to cover when representatives of a group of anti-establishment, hyper-liberals known as the Berkshire People's Republic arrive in the town. The thrilling conclusion to Kunstler's beloved series, The Harrows of Spring is a powerful, moving tale of insurrection, survival, and what it means to be human.

Book Signing with Jack Kelly: Heaven's Ditch: God, Gold, and Murder on the Erie Canal (4:00 PM)
Northshire Bookstore, 422 Broadway Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
An afternoon with staff & bookseller favorite, popular historian Jack Kelly.

The technological marvel of its age, the Erie Canal grew out of a sudden fit of inspiration. Proponents didn't just dream; they built a 360-mile waterway entirely by hand and largely through wilderness. As excitement crackled down its length, the canal became the scene of the most striking outburst of imagination in American history. The Erie Canal made New York the financial capital of America and brought the modern world crashing into the frontier. A page-turning narrative, "Heaven's Ditch" offers an excitingly fresh look at a heady, foundational moment in American history.

Michelle Shocked "Arkansas Traveler" at The Putnam Den (9:00 PM)
Putnam Den, 63A Putnam Street Saratoga Springs, NY

The 21st of July will be a bloody, whiskey-soaked night of head-cutting, flatpicking, and ragged, flag bearing emotional revelation. Feel the earth quake and the blue grass blossom in brilliant set pieces such as "Come A Long Way", "Prodigal Daughter", and "33 RPM Soul".

"Arkansas Traveler" is widely considered by music critics, players, and tastemakers to be the pinnacle of Michelle's anthropological dig into roots music and Americana. It is a devastating masterpiece, and demands to be heard live.

Jean Rohe & The End of the World Show and HAAS KOWERT TICE at Caffe Lena (7:00 PM)
Caffe Lena at The Grove at Neumann, 233 Lake Avenue Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
Jean Rohe is a celebrated and visionary multi-lingual singer & composer, mixing jazz, folk, and global music traditions on narrative songs that range from fantastical riffs on old folktales to singer-songwriter sojourns. "A sure-footed young singer-songwriter," in the words of The New York Times, she appears regularly on New York Public Radio, and has toured her projects throughout the U.S. and as far as Havana's Teatro Nacional. Her compelling, genre-bending ensemble, Jean Rohe & The End of the World Show, creates a luscious soundscape that sounds like a love song for a world in peril.

The super group of fiddler Brittany Haas (Crooked Still), bassist Paul Kowert (Punch Brothers), and guitarist Jordan Tice (Tony Trischka) is comprised of three of the acoustic music world's finest young intrumentalists. Entirely instrumental, their debut album, "you got this," takes advantage of their bursting-at-the-seams musical toolkit. The album melds alternate banjo tunings, Norwegian dance tunes, hard-rocking folk rhythms, Debussy-like string arrangements, deep growling bass, pastoral guitar, and ducking & weaving fiddle. Their top-flight musicianship and passionate expression will have you on the edge of your seat.
