Eastbound Jesus (CD Release) w/ Lucid (9:00 PM)
Putnam Den, 63A Putnam Street, Saratoga Springs, NY
EASTBOUND JESUS: Eastbound Jesus is a six piece acoustic/electric band from the small town of Greenwich, NY. They formed in the fall of 2010 in an old barn on the outskirts of their hometown and huddled around a hot wood-stove, they began writing music right away. Adam Brockway, Carl and Luke Anderson, Dave Wright, Dylan Robinson and Zack Infante take inspiration from all over the music spectrum to form a style all their own. Over a tight rhythm section, the group blends clever lyrics, unique vocal harmonies, solid strumming and picking, and rounds out their sound with lead instrumentation that is nothing short of on-point. ------------------------------------------------------------------- LUCID was born in a small Adirondack town called Plattsburgh: a place every band should be so lucky to call home. The locals there love live music, and give it their unrelenting support, while several colleges in the area provide a constant stream of new listeners eager to participate in the party. The town is flooded with musicians in one of the tightest and largest (per capita) music scenes in any city in America. On a given Friday night one can walk out of a bar where pulsing mambo beats drive the audience from their seats, into another where a frenzied crowd thrashes to raging death metal, into another where a cover band plays 80s favorites, and likely you will be followed by one or more of these musicians as they hop from band to band to play with their friends for a song or two. It is in this diverse and supportive environment that Lucid grew into adulthood.

Capital District Jazz presents the Mark Kleinhaut Quartet (7:30 PM)
Dee Sarno Theater at Saratoga Arts, 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs
Capital District Jazz, Ltd invites you to attend a fund raising concert for its program All Ears: Jazz and Improvised Music Workshop, featuring the Mark Kleinhaut Quartet, on Wednesday evening June 3 at the Saratoga Arts Center's Dee Sarno Theater.

Jazz guitarist Mark Kleinhaut, a relative newcomer to Saratoga Springs, has been performing, composing and recording for decades. In 2013, Kleinhaut was included in Scott Yanow's book, The Great Jazz Guitarists, TheUltimate Guide published by Backbeat Books. During Kleinhaut's thirty year career, he has recorded over 60 compositions, released six albums including a JazzweekTop 20 disc with saxophonist Bobby Watson, and analbum with trumpeter Tiger Okoshi. Now, upon arrival in the capital region, he has set out to re-form his quartet by enlisting some of the most accomplished and respected musicians in the region to join him: Chris Pasin-trumpet, John Menegon-bass and Bob Halek-drums. Of this lineup Kleinhaut says, "I think of these gentlemen as alchemists bringing elements to the music that recombine in the moment to create something fresh, and truly spontaneous." The Mark Kleinhaut Quartet promises an evening of creative and energetic music that is melodic, uplifting and best of all fun.

Chris Pasin earned a dual degree at the New England Conservatory of Music in classical and jazz trumpet performance. He helped found the Medium Rare Big Bandwhich performed with Dizzy Gillespie, John Lewis, and Slide Hampton. He also performed with the George Russell orchestra and spent over two years touring with the Buddy Rich band. He spent several years with the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin big band during FrankWess's tenure.

Bassist John Menegon was an integral member of the Dewey Redman Quartet, as well as the David "Fathead" Newman Quintet, spending over a decade performing, touring, and recording with each of them. Additionally,John has played many jazz luminaries including Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny , Jack DeJohnette Kenny Barron Slide Hampton, Sheila Jordan, and Matt Wilson to name but a few.

Percussionist Bob Halek has performed on the Food Network, Newport Jazz Festival, as well as concerts, festivals and clubs throughout the Northeast. In 2101 Halek was named district wide teacher of the year in the East Greenbush School District where he teaches instrumental music. His current schedule includes performances with The Empire Jazz Orchestra, Keith Pray's Big Soul Ensemble, The Capital Region Wind Ensemble, and City Rhythm.

Tickets are $15 and the proceeds of the concert will benefit the All Ears workshop. Please come and enjoy an evening of great music and help support this wonderful program. All Ears: Jazz and Improvised Music Workshop is a fun hands-on way for students of all ages to learn about jazz and improvised music. The instructors teach participants how to play using a traditional teaching method utilized by many of the jazz greats. This "play by ear" method develops a student's listening skills and along with the step-by-step guidance provided by the faculty, allows students to achieve results quickly. All Ears takes place in the summer at locations in the Capital District Region the first is being held at Schenectady Community College in July, scholarships and tuition assistance are available. For more information, Google is!

Saratoga City Ballet Company's Spring Production of Sleeping Beauty Variations....

Join us on June 6th at the Excelsior Springs Banquet Hall, Saratoga Springs, NY for two performances of our production of Sleeping Beauty Variations. Our 2:00 pm matinee will feature all our dancers; ages 3-17. The ballet opens with our youngest dancers taking the stage to show the birth of Aurora and to give small gifts to the newborn baby. The story will continue at the christening party of Aurora which is disrupted as Carbosse places a spell on Aurora that will have her pricking her finger on her sixteenth birthday and dying. However; the Lilac Fairy weakens the curse so that Aurora will fall into a deep sleep. During Aurora's sixteenth birthday, a mysterious guest hands her a bouquet of flowers, concealing the spinning needle that Aurora will prick her finger on, putting her to sleep. Our variation will end as the Lilac Fairy puts the rest of the kingdom to sleep as well.

The 6:00 pm performance will feature our dancers from ages 8-up. This performance will also include a dinner/fundraising event.

Wanda the Wonderful (7:00 PM - 9:00 PM)
Skidmore College, Davis Auditorium
Skidmore College John B. Moore Documentary Studies Collaborative (MDOCS) Program Storytellers' Institute Presents: Carolyn Macartney

She had four husbands, but she only shot one of them...Wanda the Wonderful is a mixed-genre documentary Western, about a 1920's era gun slinging wild-woman, Wanda, and her journey from Indian Territory to sheep country, via the circus, Vaudeville, Hollywood and a brothel. It is a story about sacrifice, family, and the American West, what it means to forge your own way, and the realities behind a glamorous and exciting lifestyle.

Mixing narrative and documentary approaches to storytelling, Carolyn Macartney's film combines dramatic narrative, interviews, archival photographs, and 16mm 'atmospheric' footage. Centering on Wanda's relationship with her fourth husband, Wyoming sheep rancher Carl Hampton, Wanda's photographs along with interviews with family and friends flush out the stories and expand our understanding of the characters and family.

Carolyn Macartney works in photography and film, and hybrids thereof. She made her first film with a Double 8mm film camera that she found in her granny's attic to accompany her original electronic music composition. She included in this film B&W still photographs that she printed out (by hand in the darkroom) and then animated. The raw, provocative, fallible side of humanity is what interests her most. Carolyn's films have won awards at Ann Arbor Film Festival, Onion City Film Festival, Houston Worldfest and other juried screenings and have enjoyed success in screenings and festivals around the world. She has fourteen years of professional experience as a Director of Photography, having shot four feature length narrative films as well as numerous music videos, commercials, short films and documentaries. Carolyn's award winning still photography has been published and exhibited in the US and Europe. Among other honors, Carolyn has received an award for music composition, a DAAD scholarship to study painting at the Hochscule der Künste in Berlin, Germany, and a Kodak Faculty Scholars Award. Carolyn has lived in five different countries and in as many States within America. She received her BA in Art from Smith College and her MFA in Filmmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Evan Roberts, Arvind (7:00 PM)
Skidmore College, Davis Auditorium
Skidmore College John B. Moore Documentary Studies Collaborative (MDOCS) Program Storytellers' Institute Presents: Evan Roberts

Family stories are not always easy. Award-winning filmmaker Evan Roberts presents, "Arvind," (2014), chronicling the experiences of a queer teenage boy who embarks on a journey to document the dramatic story of his life. Hathaway, living in Austin, TX, enjoys theater and like any other teenager struggles to get through high school. Raised by his father, Arvind's only memories of his mother is of her feeding him mosquito poison as a small child. Roberts explores the impact of the mother's mental illness, long absence and later attempts to contact her children through social media by following Arvind's documenting of his life through play writing.

Evan is a filmmaker and educator based in Austin, Texas. He received his MFA in Film Production from the University of Texas in Austin in 2014 and is the writer/director of award-winning short films (33 Teeth, Yeah, Kowalski!) that have screened internationally. His short documentary Arvind was the recipient of an Austin Film Society grant. Roberts is the founder of Audio Heirlooms, an oral history production company, and facilitates screenwriting workshops on adapting life stories into fiction films.

Nancy Reisman "Trompe L'Oeil" (6:00 PM)
Northshire Bookstore, 422 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
A reading, discussion and signing with Reisman, a Yaddo alumna and recipient of awards including the O. Henry Award. Reisman's book The First Desire was listed as a New York Times notable book of the year.

During a vacation in Rome, the Murphy family experiences a life-altering tragedy. In the immediate aftermath, James, Nora, and their children find solace in their Massachusetts coast home, but as the years pass the weight of the loss disintegrates the increasingly fragile marriage and leaves its mark on each family member. Trompe l'Oeil seamlessly alternates among several characters' points of view, capturing the details of their daily lives as well as their longing for connection and fear of abandonment. Through the turbulence of marriage, the challenges of parenthood, job upheavals, and calamities large and small, Trompe l'Oeil examines family legacies, the ways those legacies persist, and the ways they might be transcended. Nancy Reisman is a master of psychological acuity, creating characters who are wholly unique and yet express our own longings and anxieties. Trompe l'Oeil haunts not only with its story but also with the beauty of its insight into hopes, desires, and fears.

Exhibition Opening

Jonna McKone is a radio producer, documentarian and artist. Her work has been funded by the Marguerite Casey Foundation and The Journalism Center on Children & Families and The Institute of Museum and Library Services. Her art practice examines concepts of distance - geographic, economic and temporal -- approached through ethnography, archival research, walking, installation and nonfiction filmmaking. She seeks to unravel the nature of memory, labor, gesture and the icons of every day. She is currently at work on a personal film that explores the relationships between memory, artifact and her own familial history. Jonna is a graduate of Bowdoin College and recently received her MFA from Duke University.

A World War I Tribute with Baritone John Brancy (8:00 PM)

John has put together a journey into the music of WWI - revealing the thoughts, emotions and psyche of the great composers during that tremulous time.

The program will include a performance of George Butterworth's (who died in combat during the Battle of the Somme in 1916) famously beautiful settings of poetry from A.E. Housman's A Shropshire Lad, as well as songs by Gerald Finzi, Claude Debussy, Carl Orff, and Charles Ives.

In addition to the works of the highly respected old masters, the Finale program will also include the artistry of up-and-coming classical musicians. Joining the Orchestra for the Piano Concerto is 22-year-old pianist BEATRICE RANA, described by Gramophone Magazine as "an old soul that belies her twenty years, [possessing] more than a touch of genius." The program will also feature Mixed Messages, the newest work of critically acclaimed contemporary composer Nico Muhly, whose recent work also includes commissions by the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and New York City Ballet. Mixed Messages, commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra, will have its world premiere in May 2015 in Philadelphia and its New York premiere at Carnegie Hall, and will be one of the works performed on the Orchestra's 2015 Tour of Europe. Finally, in keeping with time-honored tradition, the Orchestra will conclude its 2015 residency with its annual performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.

Eric Paslay-Vapor Live (7:00 PM)
Vapor Night Club-Saratoga Casino and Raceway
Born in Abilene, Texas and raised in Waco and Temple. By the age of 16, Paslay had already written and recorded 10 songs that he played out around Texas. When Paslay moved to Nashville to pursue a music career, he eventually landed his own deal with the Cal IV in 2006. His songwriting and his impressive voice began garnering attention from labels and he signed with EMI Records Nashville. Paslay says he began writing songs because he wanted to sing them for people. "I turn it on when I get on stage. I love to entertain," says Paslay. Fans who have seen him on stage will testify there is so much more to the tall, Texas redhead than his excellent songwriting ability. Paslay is a charismatic performer and a potent vocalist who knows how to connect with an audience. As his hit singles "Friday Night" and "Song About A Girl" reach the upper level of the charts, Paslay has arrived as an artist in his own right.
