Anagama Kiln Firing

Salem Art Works
Salem Art Works will have four kiln firings in 2013. These firings are available to ceramic artists who would like their work fired in the anagama wood kiln. Three full days will be spent loading the kiln, taking into account the movement of the flame and desired surface on the pieces. After loading, the kiln will be fired for five days and four nights, overseen by ceramic artists on site. All work must be cone 10 clay, bone dry, or bisque fired and delivered to SAW at least two weeks prior to each firing for loading. The price is 6 cents per cubic inch for firing.
The public is always invited to come and watch the process and watch the unloading as the ceramic artists discover their finished work as it comes out of the kiln.

This three day workshop gives students an opportunity to explore the exciting medium of blown glass. The class will concentrate on a particular aspect such as blowing bubbles, vessel making, or color application. Students will be led through a series of demonstrations of tools and techniques to help them understand the principles of glass blowing and glass sculpture. The class will then try out the techniques as a group. Each student will have the chance to work one on one with an instructor, creating a finished piece to take home. Students are encouraged bring their own ideas, a lot of energy, and patience. Students must wear closed toe shoes, long sleeved cotton shirts, and thick cotton or denim long pants.

On day one, participants will gain a basic understanding of blacksmithing by designing and forging a pair of functional tongs. In this two day beginner's workshop, students will spend the first day being introduced to oxy-acetylene welding, heating, and bending. For the purpose of expediency, MIG welding will be the primary focus, but workshops can be customized. Students will be led through health and safety instruction and then will practice the basic techniques on scrap metal provided.
With these skills, students will spend the second day constructing a metal piece of their own creation. Students should come with ideas or sketches of work they are interested in fabricating. If more time is needed to complete projects, students may use the welding facilities the following week, working independently, for an hourly rate. Please contact the SAW office for details.
Long sleeved cotton shirts, thick cotton or denim long pants, and leather boots are required. Students should bring pencil and paper to sketch out ideas and take notes.

Veterans and active duty military are encouraged to stop by for free coffee from Stewart's Shops, giveaways and specials from merchants in the Stewart's Plaza. Military personnel and their families are also invited to bring pictures or memorabilia to share, and the public will have a chance to write letters to troops serving abroad.

About the Tri-City Celtics: The Tri-City Celtics are a charter member of the WPSL Mid Atlantic Conference, competing against the United FC Binghamton, FC Westchester, Empire Revs WNY, Syracuse Lady Knights and the Yankee Lady FC. The Tri-City Celtics roster includes several former high school standouts from the Capital Region, currently competing for some of the Northeast's Top Division I, II, & III colleges.
The WPSL provides a playing opportunity for elite woman soccer players to play, develop and promote Women's Soccer at the highest amateur level in North America and is a stepping stone for our professional and national teams. Former WPSL players include USWNT members Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe, Heather O'Reilly, Alex Morgan, Tobin Heath, Kristine Lilly, Bandi Chastain, Rachel Buelher, and the list goes on. First embraced by the jam scene for their raw talent, the cross-over sound that is showcased on their self-titled album (2010), which was dubbed a "Top 10 Album of 2010" by The Huffington Post, propelled them into the periphery of mainstream music.
Returning to their acoustic roots for their third studio release, Swim Out Past the Sun (2011), THP's guitar duo set aside their electric axes for a more organic approach. Featuring a three song sit-in by longtime Jerry Garcia collaborator David Grisman, the album presents a fresh perspective from the ever-evolving quintet. THP and SOPTS were produced and recorded by multi-platinum, Grammy and Oscar Award-winner Scott Mathews and mastered by Grammy Award-winner Vlado Meller.
Following the intensive recording sessions of their previous two releases, the Pets were eager to produce a raw product more true to their notorious live sound while adapting to the current recorded music market. That desire is where the Everywhere Sessions was born. Everywhere Sessions: Volume 1 EP was recorded in the AURA Music Events Studio in two takes with zero overdubbing or editing and features three previously unreleased tracks from three different song-writers and three different eras. One chilly evening, early in the fall of 2010, Adam Brockway, Dave Wright, Carl Anderson, Luke Anderson and Zack Infante gathered by a woodstove in a barn on the outskirts of Greenwich, NY. With a snare, a kick, and an old beat up high hat, Carl began teaching himself how to play the drums while Adam and Zack played along on guitars, Luke on banjo and Dave on bass. Vocal melodies and harmonies were flowing like the beer from their cans and within a few hours, the group had written 2 songs front to back and it was obvious, at least to the brand new quintet, that they had immediately put together a sound that was just as unique as it was traditional.

On Saturday, June 29 we'll be at Evergreen Country Club for a 12:00 p.m. start; registration begins at 11:00 a.m. Our all-inclusive event is available for $75 per golfer! Feel free to bring non-golfing guests to join you for dinner at only $25. This is event is open to all Alumni, family members and friends and is held for the benefit of the CUPBAA Scholarship Fund.
Registration cost includes greens fees, cart, and buffet dinner immediately following. A cash bar will also be available. Register yourself or a foursome below.
The Golf Scramble will be a 4-person best-shot format. You may make up your own foursome or we can place you in one. Prizes will be awarded for both skill level and "character", so please sign up whether you know your handicap or have never bothered to figure it out!
Hole sponsorship is also available with a $100 donation. All sponsorships and other donations go directly to the CUPBAA Scholarship Fund, which is maintained by the university. Circus Smirkus Returns to Saratoga July 5 through 7
Tickets on sale beginning this week
(SARATOGA SPRINGS) - Circus Smirkus, the acclaimed international youth circus, returns to Saratoga Springs this summer, July 5 through 7, at the Saratoga Race Course on Union Avenue. Shows will be July 5 at 7 PM and July 6 and 7 at 1 and 7 PM. Tickets are $21 for adults (13+) and $18 for children (2 to 12) and are available by calling 1-877-SMIRKUS. Children younger than two are free on an adult's lap.
More than two dozen teenaged stars bring youthful exuberance and polished skills from all parts of the country. The show is full of talent and spectacle, with aerials, acrobatics, highwire, juggling, trapeze, clowning and array of brilliant costumes. Circus Smirkus is the only American youth circus to put on a full-season tour under its own big top, a 24-meter, 750-seat, one-ring tent in the European style. The Saratoga Springs shows are presented by The Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs.
Circus Smirkus is a non-profit, award-winning international youth circus founded with a mission: to promote the skills, culture and traditions of the traveling circus and to inspire youth to engage in life-changing adventures in the circus arts.
The Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs draws upon the successes of Waldorf schools world-wide to provide a strong focus on math, science, literature, languages and the arts through hands-on, experiential learning. Currently entering its 31th year of operation, the Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs educates children from pre-school through the 12th grade.

CF is a genetic disease affecting 30,000 children and adults in the United States. Since 1955 when the Foundation was established, the mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a nonprofit donor-supported organization, has been to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease. Despite all of the breakthroughs in research, we continue to lose precious lives. The money we raise at events like the 65 Roses Gala contributes to life-saving research and treatments.

Join Salem Art Works for the Mutant Bike Workshop with the Troy Bike Rescue, where students with some welding experience are given the opportunity to create one-of-a-kind bicycles utilizing more in-depth welding techniques. Students will have access to oxy-acetylene for cutting and bending, MIG welders and finishing tools as well as recycled bike frames to repurpose into new creations. Participants are welcome to bring personal materials to tailor their piece to meet their vision. Students may use the welding facilities the following week, working independently, at an hourly rate. Please contact the SAW office for details.
Long sleeved cotton shirts, thick cotton or denim long pants, and leather boots are required. Students are encouraged to contact Troy Bike Rescue to discuss their plans prior to the class. A pencil and paper are recommended to sketch out ideas and take notes.
*Troy Bike Rescue is a volunteer-run bicycle resource center located in Troy, NY. They focus on diverting bicycles from the waste stream of car culture, teaching hands-bicycle maintenance, and re-purposing bicycle parts into new creations.

In this two day beginner's workshop, students will spend the first day being introduced to oxy-acetylene welding, heating, and bending. For the purpose of expediency, MIG welding will be the primary focus, but workshops can be customized. Students will be led through health and safety instruction and then will practice the basic techniques on scrap metal provided.
With these skills, students will spend the second day constructing a metal piece of their own creation. Students should come with ideas or sketches of work they are interested in fabricating. If more time is needed to complete projects, students may use the welding facilities the following week, working independently, for an hourly rate. Please contact the SAW office for details.

The Saratoga Arts Celebration is a juried fine arts and fine crafts festival of visual and
performing arts taking place August 17 and 18, 2013 from 10 - 5 Saturday and Sunday. The event is held rain or shine at the National Museum of Dance, 99 S. Broadway. In a gorgeous park setting as well as inside the Dance Museum, the Arts Celebration is timed with start of Travers Festival week in Saratoga Springs.
The Festival is a juried event featuring more than 100 artists
selected locally and from across the country and Canada. Their
paintings, photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, mixed media,
jewelry, ceramics, fiber, metal and glass pieces are all originals
available for collecting. The Festival includes live musical performances on both days, as well as, fun family art activities, and a variety of food temptations.
Festival admission is free.
There is plenty of free parking.
The event is family friendly.

Anagama Kiln Firing

Salem Art Works
Salem Art Works will have four kiln firings in 2013. These firings are available to ceramic artists who would like their work fired in the anagama wood kiln. Three full days will be spent loading the kiln, taking into account the movement of the flame and desired surface on the pieces. After loading, the kiln will be fired for five days and four nights, overseen by ceramic artists on site. All work must be cone 10 clay, bone dry, or bisque fired and delivered to SAW at least two weeks prior to each firing for loading. The price is 6 cents per cubic inch for firing.
The public is always invited to come and watch the process and watch the unloading as the ceramic artists discover their finished work as it comes out of the kiln.

This three day workshop gives students an opportunity to explore the exciting medium of blown glass. The class will concentrate on a particular aspect such as blowing bubbles, vessel making, or color application. Students will be led through a series of demonstrations of tools and techniques to help them understand the principles of glass blowing and glass sculpture. The class will then try out the techniques as a group. Each student will have the chance to work one on one with an instructor, creating a finished piece to take home. Students are encouraged bring their own ideas, a lot of energy, and patience. Students must wear closed toe shoes, long sleeved cotton shirts, and thick cotton or denim long pants.

This class is offered to students who have some welding experience and wish to learn more in-depth techniques as well as incorporating other materials in creating sculpture. Students will have access to oxy-acetylene for cutting and bending, MIG welders, and finishing tools as well as materials. Students may use the welding facilities the following week, working independently, for an hourly rate. Please contact the SAW office for details.
Long sleeved cotton shirts, thick cotton or denim long pants, and leather boots are required. Students should bring pencil and paper to sketch out ideas and take notes.

7th Annual Intercollegiate Iron Pour

The 7th Annual Intercollegiate Iron Pour is a chance for college students from across the nation to come together for three days to share techniques, ideas, and resources in iron casting. Participants spend the weekend working in groups to prepare the furnace and pour site. The $80 (plus $0.50 per lb. of iron, $20 per 100 lbs. of sand) fee includes participation in the pour as well as meals and camping for the weekend. Interested participants should contact the Salem Art Works office as well as their respective art departments.
Participants interested in taking a mold making workshop prior to the pour should contact the SAW office for pricing and scheduling.
As always, the public is invited to come watch the pour and make a piece of their own using scratch blocks.

PKU Fundraiser In Honor of Logan Burniche

Logan is a 9 year old Classical PKU patient. PKU is a rare genetic metabolic disorder that is currently not curable. An infant is born without the ability to properly break down an amino acid called phenylalanine. It is the building block of proteins which is obtained through diet. Without special diet, metabolic formula and close monitoring, the body can cause intellectual disabilities, mental retardation, neurological problems and memory loss.
Logan has been being treated at Albany Medical Children's hospital since birth. We have been blessed by the support of the Children's Hospital, our family, friends and charitable organizations over the years as they have supported us to the fullest by helping to off-setting medical costs, giving us emotional support and most of all helping us make sure that Logan stays healthy.
Now is the time to give back. We have teamed up with the National PKU Alliance. They work to improve the lives of the families and individuals associated with PKU through research and support all while seeking a cure. Families are in need of all types of support. Our goal as a team is to help raise awareness within our community. It is so important that our community know the effects and preventative measures that can help PKU patients live a happy and healthy life.
