Don Julin & Billy Strings (7:00 PM - 9:00 PM)
Caffe Lena
Incendiary American roots duo Billy Strings & Don Julin harken back to the time when bluegrass was a rough-and-tumble art form pouring out of the Appalachian mountains. With just two instruments (guitar and mandolin) and one voice, this duo has been generating huge buzz based on their intense live shows. Drenched in sweat, grimacing and howling like a bluegrass berserker and picking with absolute ferocity, Billy Strings hails from Michigan, where he met mandolinist Don Julin. Older in years and experience, Julin has carved out a lengthy career at the forefront of acoustic mandolin music, known for his wide versatility, powerful picking technique, and remarkable creativity on this humble instrument. On stage the two egg each other on to more and more intense riffs and improvised breaks, breaking through to new levels of musicianship. There's a reason that they were called "the unholy child of Pantera and Tony Rice" by The Bluegrass Situation, and they show this intensity on their new album, Fiddle Tune X.

Robert Randolph & The Family Band (9:00 PM)
Putnam Den
When Robert Randolph talks about his new album, Lickety Split, a few words come up over and over-"joy," "freedom," "energy." Which is no surprise, really, because those are the same things that immediately spring into a listener's mind when these twelve tracks from the virtuoso pedal steel guitarist and his longtime accompanists, the Family Band, explode out of the speakers.

"My thing is really upbeat, uptempo, with great guitar riffs," says Randolph, summarizing his musical ambitions, "but also catchy choruses and lyrics that someday will make this music into classic tunes."

"Robert Randolph is an American Original," says Don Was, President of Randolph's new label, Blue Note Records. "He has mastered what is, arguably, the most complex instrument in the world and developed a unique voice that is equal parts street-corner church and Bonnaroo. This album finally captures the energy and excitement of his legendary live performances."

Robert Randolph & The Family Band first gained national attention with the release of the album Live at the Wetlands in 2002. The band followed with three studio recordings over the next eight years-Unclassified, Colorblind, and We Walk This Road-which, together with tireless touring and unforgettable performances at such festivals as Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, won them an expanding and passionate fan base. Randolph's unprecedented prowess on his instrument garnered him a spot on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" list, and also attracted the attention of such giants as Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana, who have collaborated with him on stage and in the studio.

"What I've learned from being around those guys-and you never really notice it until the moment is away from you-is that it's really important to them that someone keeps original music going, that you're not just trying to be like everybody else," he says. "Eric really wants to know what's going on now, he's always going 'Show me that lick again!'-they're like little kids, and that's really the great part about it. It makes me think that I need to keep getting better, to stay excited and keep trying to be innovative and keep growing."

Dave Spadaro Group Opens the show.

Session Americana--CD Release Concert (7:00 PM - 9:00 PM)
Caffe Lena
Session Americana is a Boston-based rock band in a tea cup, or possibly a folk band in a whiskey bottle. On stage is a small table wired with microphones, a vintage suitcase recast as a kick drum, an old Estey field organ, a pre-war parlor guitar, a harmonica case fire-damaged when Jack's bar went up in flames and graffitied by Depeche Mode roadies, and an assortment of other instruments that get passed around in this freewheeling modern hootenanny. The anything-could-happen feel of a Session show depends on craft that's not accidental or easily won; they bring a kind of ease and genuineness to timeless Americana music, sometimes presenting the latest batch of original songs, sometimes reaching back into depths of the American "song bag". Tonight they bring us, hot off the press, "Pack Up the Circus," their 6th album. It was co-produced by Anais Mitchell and features guest appearances by Liza Carthy, Laura Cortese, Jefferson Hamer and several other Boston-area luminaries.

Turkuaz w/ Big Mean Sound Machine (9:00 PM)
Putnam Den
Credible bios are supposed to be objective and not full of superlatives and hyperbole, but it's hard to avoid gushing when the subject is a funk army of multi-instrumentals and singers that is part freight train and part tyrannosaurus rex, who-even on an off night-can blow away a room on the basis of sheer physics alone. That's one way to describe Turkuaz, but it doesn't address the music. In this regard, as with any band, influences are everything. One cannot escape them as one seeks to carve out a unique sound for themselves. Still, there are so many benefits to having Sly & The Family Stone, Rick James, Parliament and Bohannon in your record collection. With this as the basis for a recipe, Turkuaz adds healthy doses of jittery, world-pop-power groove-reminiscent of Remain In Light era Talking Heads-and a passion for Motown and R&B, resulting in a refreshing twist on the funk idiom.

Turkuaz certainly does have sheer size in their favor, but when broken down into the basic components, each stands out on their own. Founders Dave Brandwein and Taylor Shell had the cream of the crop to choose from at Berklee, but making it happen as a large touring ensemble takes more than chops: it takes the right blend of personalities. When Turkuaz takes the stage the chemistry is clear. The special combination of elements-singers in sequined dresses, guys in tails (or sometimes all of them in jumpsuits or other complimentary outfits) horns, keys, guitars, amps and drums and smiles all around... well, it's easy to get caught up in the explosive auditory and visual circus and find oneself dancing. Despite all of the gear and people on stage, it is becomes clear that it is not the size that matters here: it is performance.

Through constant touring and great festival performances, Turkuaz has built a solid, passionate coast-to-coast fan base that grows with every mile driven and each night on stage. They are currently criss-crossing North America in support of their third independent release, Future 86, and have plans to conquer the world... or at least shake the walls and all the booties in every room they play...

BIG MEAN SOUND MACHINE

Big Mean Sound Machine formed in 2009 in Ithaca, New York with one goal: to create music that stimulates both Body AND Mind. Today, BMSM's collective of over 15 analog artists spread out over the East Coast United States bring together musical languages of West Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and North America to create a lush bed of rhythm and harmony that embraces even the most hardcore fans of both Traditional Funk and Avant-Garde Jazz - and everyone in between! Anyone who has witnessed Big Mean Sound Machine live knows that their performances are among the heaviest and the sweatiest. Those familiar with BMSM studio releases also knows that they can refine the complex sonic force of over a dozen individuals with style and clarity. The Big Mean Sound Machine maintains a busy performance schedule, captivating cities all over the United States. For those like us who are tired of the status quo, there is good news: THE BIG MEAN SOUND MACHINE HAS OFFICIALLY ARRIVED.

Canadian singer-songwriter Garnet Rogers is one of the very finest singers around. He applies his haunting baritone to vivid songs full of cinematic detail, accompanying himself on guitar and spicing things up with a lightning-quick wit. On stage, and on his numerous albums, Garnet is literate, passionate, and deeply purposeful as he sings about the small victories of everyday life, and how people find their way through an often imperfect and wearying world. He has been featured on numerous television and radio programs, including The Country Beat, Morningside, and All Things Considered.

6-String Pioneers: Alice Stuart & Melissa Ferrick (8:00 PM - 10:00 PM)
Caffe Lena
For this very special, one-time-only concert we've paired two generations of powerful female guitarists. Way ahead of her time, Alice Stuart blazed the trail for women in rock and roll as one of the only females in the country to write her own music, front a male band, and play lead guitar on world tours. Blues Hall of Fame inductee Dick Waterman once remarked, "There would be no Bonnie Raitt without Alice Stuart." Through the 60s and 70s she played with Jerry Garcia, John Prine, Albert King, Elvin Bishop, as well as Joan Baez, Doc Watson, Jack Elliott, Phil Ochs, Rosalie Sorrells, Mississippi John Hurt & Jerry Ricks. She joined forces with Frank Zappa to form the Mothers of Invention. Since restarting her career in the late 90s she has released three albums and won numerous West Coast blues awards. She brings a radiant warmth to the stage, and a pocketful of incredible stories and songs that can only be earned through five decades of working with the best of the best.

Signed to Atlantic Records in the mid-'90s, Melissa Ferrick was part of a new wave of alt-rock femalesincluding artists like Liz Phair and PJ Harveywho sang about womanhood with sharp, unchecked honesty. She left Atlantic and signed with MPress in 2011, and her debut album hit Billboard's Heatseekers Album Charts, won an International Acoustic Music Award (IAMA) and garnered two Independent Music Award (IMA) nominations. With her hard-hitting songs she has tackled everything from the intensely personal to the quasi-political, remaining open about her personal life and issues important to her as a lesbian

Wild Ponies (7:00 PM - 9:00 PM)
Caffe Lena
Doug and Telisha Williams and drummer Jake Winebrenner deliver unflinching country songs that move from easygoing swing to Crazy Horse-ish rattle-and-thump to traditional twang. Since first emerging as a folk duo a few years ago, the Williams's sound has gotten more raw, sometimes raucous, often rockin' and audiences coast to coast are getting hooked on it. Their new album, Things That Used To Shine, finds the sweet, unaffected voice of Telisha opening up about the skeletons that have haunted her closet for years. Telisha has a friendly, cheerful demeanor and band's melodies are catchy, but watch out because their songs won't let you off lightly: murder, abuse, survival. Grammy-winning producer Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams) recorded the album's 12 songs in three days, running the band's harmonies through the same pre-amps once used by the Beatles.

Portland Cello Project (7:00 PM - 9:00 PM)
Caffe Lena
"This indie orchestra gives classical music a jolt of energy," - Spin Magazine

Oregon's Portland Cello Project (or, PCP, as their fans affectionately call them), amazes audiences with extravagant performances everywhere from NPR's A Prairie Home Companion, to parties on loading docks in NYC, to symphony halls, to punk rock clubs. The "group of cello-wielding maniacs" (Spacelab Magazine) has built a reputation for erasing musical barriers wherever they go. With a repertoire now numbering over 1,000 pieces, no two shows are alike. They have collaborated with a diverse assortment of musicians, from high school and university music programs, to the Dandy Warhols to Garrison Keillor to Trampled by Turtles to Ben Sollee, just to name a few. "If you could see how crazy everyone around here gets whenever the PCP cello-izes a new hip-hop or pop hit (which is a lot), you'd understand why their Thing is the best Thing going in Portland," - IFC's Portlandia Blog

In June, 2014 this celebrated father and daughter released a long-awaited duo album, The Moral of the Elephant, in which they reinterpret and revisit a number of powerful, traditional songs. Martin Carthy recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards at Royal Albert Hall. Stone | Steel | Paper (12:00 PM - 5:00 PM)
The Laffer Gallery, 96 Broad Street, Schuylerville
The Laffer Gallery will be hosting John Van Alstine's exhibit Stone | Steel | Paper from April 8th through May 10th.

John Van Alstine, widely known for his large scale outdoor sculptures made from stone and found object steel, has notably become one of America's most important sculptors over the past decade.

For more than thirty-five years, the focus of Van Alstine's sculpture has been the exploration of motion and balance through the natural forces of gravity and inertia, as experienced in his monumental, large scale and smaller works located in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. The combination of natural elements with the man-made creates a poetic and choreographed visual balance, often referencing figurative, classical, nautical, celestial and western mythological themes.

Since the 1970s, his sculpture has been reviewed in several publications such as the Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, USA Today, New York Times, Art in America, Art Forum, Art News and Sculpture Magazine.

The collection can be viewed Wednesday through Sunday any time between noon and 5 pm.

Sloan Wainwright & Cosy Sheridan (8:00 PM - 8:00 PM)
Caffe Lena
Enjoy a night of vivacious high spirits, compassionate and inspiring lyrics, and gorgeous voices. Cosy Sheridan writes love songs for adults, practical philosophy for a complicated world, blues-flavored gospel, modern re-tellings of myth, and parodies that reveal a "keen and wicked eye for the excesses of our fast-food, tv-happy and noisome culture." (The Boston Globe). A graduate of Berklee, as well as a guitar student of Eric Schoenberg and Guy Van Duser, Sheridan brings serious chops to the stage.

Singer/songwriter Sloan Wainwright has an effortless command of a variety of American musical styles - pop, folk, jazz and blues. Her family tree (brother Loudon Wainwright III, nephew Rufus Wainwright, nieces Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche) reads like a who's who of contemporary folk music. Sloan's incredible gift is not only her songwriting but her beautiful, irresistable voice. Warm and smoky and smooth, it makes her earthy, ominous lyrics seem all the more intense.

Willy Porter with Carmen Nickerson (7:00 PM - 9:00 PM)
Caffe Lena
Searching for "the shaman that lives inside the guitar" has led Willy Porter on a musical and personal odyssey spanning more than two decades, ten albums, and multiple continents. With his "spit-fire-percussive acoustic guitar strumming and fiery chord picking" (Billboard) he has a knack for turning first-time listeners into die-hard fans. For this CD Release Tour (2015's "Human Kindness") he is traveling with singer Carmen Nickerson. This righteous indie-folk duo has worked with Jethro Tull, Tori Amos, Paul Simon, and Jeff Beck on stages around the world. Their live shows are guitar driven events- equal parts grit, soul, and muscle - that are electrifying, dynamic, and wholly original. Nickerson's playful singing style pairs exquisitely with Willy's grooves to add fresh layers and new depth to the songs.

Steve Katz: Stories & Songs From a Life In Music (8:00 PM - 10:00 PM)
Caffe Lena
It's impossible to pare down the remarkable life story of guitarist and singer Steve Katz to a few short sentences. Along with Stefan Grossman, Maria Muldaur, John Sebastian and David Grisman, Katz is a founding member of the Even Dozen Jug band. He's a founder of the hugely influential Blues Project, and he founded and spent five years with Blood, Sweat & Tears, during which time the group won three Grammies, were voted best band by the Playboy Jazz and Pop Poll two years in a row, and won three major Downbeat awards. Steve wrote many of their songs, including the beautiful "Sometimes in Winter".

He went on to produce records for Lou Reed, became Vice President of Mercury Records, and during years spent in Dublin fell in love with Irish music and literature. He directed Green Linnet Records, the foremost label for traditional Irish music in America.

After more than five decades in the music business, Katz is taking stock. What you'll hear at the show is the inside story and superb songs of a humorous, self-effacing, and prodigiously talented man.

Peter Mulvey with opener Hayley Reardon (8:00 PM - 10:00 PM)
Caffe Lena
Peter Mulvey has pursued a restless, eclectic path as a writer and musician - immersing himself in Tin Pan Alley, modern acoustic music, poetry, literature, and bedrock Americana. The end result is punchy acoustic rock & ballads that don't shy away from darkness, or light. His engagement in the moment is intoxicating for live audiences. Mulvey has a honed ability to hold an audience's attention and transport them, using wit, humor, and melody to gracefully introduce complex and provocative concepts and characters. Night after night, Mulvey draws on all that he has studied to make a fresh, vital moment out of everything he and the audience have brought to the table that night. "To come together in a room, to try to make music come alive, for real, for right now, and then to let it go . . . that is the whole deal for me."

Opener Hayley Reardon was named 2012 Bostonian of the Year for both her music and her work to pair it with a message of teen empowerment.

She was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame and over the years has won countless Austin Music and Folk Alliance awards.
Eliza's music has always offered a vivid reflection of the times we live in, full of joys and sorrows, each song a window into a life of struggle and triumph in a world she feels is "poised on the edge of moral, economic and environmental bankruptcy." Her latest release is the Grammy-nominated Nocturne Diaries. Produced by her son, Cisco Ryder, it is a contemplative work inspired by the converging forces of her highest hopes and darkest fears.

The program will also feature Mixed Messages, the newest work of critically acclaimed contemporary composer Nico Muhly, whose recent work also includes commissions by the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and New York City Ballet. Mixed Messages, commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra, will have its world premiere in May 2015 in Philadelphia and its New York premiere at Carnegie Hall, and will be one of the works performed on the Orchestra's 2015 Tour of Europe. Eric Paslay-Vapor Live (7:00 PM)
Vapor Night Club-Saratoga Casino and Raceway
Born in Abilene, Texas and raised in Waco and Temple. By the age of 16, Paslay had already written and recorded 10 songs that he played out around Texas. When Paslay moved to Nashville to pursue a music career, he eventually landed his own deal with the Cal IV in 2006. His songwriting and his impressive voice began garnering attention from labels and he signed with EMI Records Nashville. Paslay says he began writing songs because he wanted to sing them for people. "I turn it on when I get on stage. I love to entertain," says Paslay. Fans who have seen him on stage will testify there is so much more to the tall, Texas redhead than his excellent songwriting ability. Paslay is a charismatic performer and a potent vocalist who knows how to connect with an audience. As his hit singles "Friday Night" and "Song About A Girl" reach the upper level of the charts, Paslay has arrived as an artist in his own right.
