A riveting debut novel, from an author with local roots. Finn is a 17-year-old full of paradoxes. He's a drug dealer, but he's scoring money to send his twin sister to Harvard. He's desperate to shoot up even though he's the most popular kid in Dammertown. He's a philosopher and orator who's failing all his classes. The only time he finds peace is when he's bird-watching. Finn's life begins to spiral out of control, until he discovers a miracle drug called indigo. Finn is convinced that the drug is the way out of everything broken in his life. Saratoga County Fairgounds, Ballston Spa, NY
A traditional, family friendly Folk Music Festival held annually at the Saratoga County NY Fairgrounds, Ballston Spa NY. The GottaGetGon festival is a public function of the Pickin' & Singin' Gatherin', a folk music club near Albany NY. We started it in 1970. The PSG's traditional refrain on Memorial Day Weekend is "Gotta Get Gone!" from the city and out to where music and friendship takes over for the weekend. It's a time to lean back, sit around, and be with friends and family, play some music, sing some songs, and listen to some of the best music around, day and night.

The GottaGetGon is an intimate family folk festival, put on by a small handful of volunteers, and designed for folks who believe that music is part of life. It is a place where grownups, teens, and children can be part of the experience of sharing music, time, and friendship. It's a special gather'n' where PSG invites a few select performers to join us for a weekend of fine music.

Rich Ortiz at Gaffney's (9:00 PM - 1:00 AM)
Gaffney's Restaurant, 16 Caroline St. Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
Rich Ortiz's style is truly his own and his music is his soul. Ortiz, never a wallflower, believes he is the product of his family's cultural diversity and strengths. Since the age of seventeen he's focused all of his talents and time on his acoustic solo act, if you can call it that. Rich plays guitar, harmonica, and peddle bass (with his feet), and he turns heads with his vocals! He has opened shows for CHICAGO,REO Speedwagon,STYX, Ted Nugent, Ludacris, Hoobastank,KC and the sunshine band, Jeffrey Gaines, Ryan Montbleau Band, The Wood Brothers,Robert Randolph and the family band, Tea Leaf Green,Zach Deputy, Kracker, Merl Saunders, Melvin Seals, Jim Weider and the Drifters.

Inspired by artists like Jim Croce, James Taylor, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Willie Nelson, he says "I feel I have to change every gig around in order to grow as a musician." He plays six and twelve string acoustic guitar and chooses not to cultivate a target audience. He thinks "ideally the feeling of people who leave the room or listen to your CD should be one of making someone's day. What comes out of your tongue says a lot about your soul."

We're bringing the Tinkers to Saratoga to play two times today. In the late afternoon they'll play an outdoor dance at the Farmer's Market at part of an ArtsFest First Friday event that Caffe Lena is collaborating on, and at 8 PM they'll play a full show for the cafe audience.
Since its formation in 2012 the band has lit up the East Coast, from clubs and live radio to major festivals and barn dances. The quartet is fronted by folk scene boundary-pusher Peter Siegel (mandolin, guitar, banjo picker and songwriter) who has been seen on stage with Pete Seeger and Judy Collins, and played traditional and progressive tunes for contra dances for decades. Bassist Garrett Sawyer has toured the US and Canada as a member of Senegalese hip-hop band Gokh-Bi System and throughout the Caribbean with soca star Kurt Allen. Now teamed up with the powerful and deeply knowledgable ethnomusicologist drummer Dave Noonan and fantastically versatile Hawaiian fiddler Audrey Knuth, The Gaslight Tinkers shake the stage with "Music that consistently fizzes and pops with unexpected textures and turns." Fred Eaglesmith and Tif Ginn (7:00 PM)
Caffe Lena, 47 Phila St. Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
Acclaimed Canadian singer, songwriter and rock 'n roll bandleader Fred Eaglesmith is a genuine iconoclast, old-time showman, and true original with nineteen albums to his name. He has doggedly gone his own way as an independent artist, becoming almost a cult figure as a result. His thousands of devoted fans across North America flock to his live shows and have built festivals to showcase his concerts. He has been honored with a Juno Award, song placement in films by Martin Scorsese, a #1 hit on the bluegrass charts; he has wowed David Letterman, and found his songs included in the curriculum at two colleges.

Often found in the company of his large traveling family of sidemen, kids and roadies, Fred will be performing an intimate duo concert with long time accompanist Tif Ginn. This Texas native is a gutsy, amazing singer and a transcendent songwriter. Sharing Eaglesmith's flair for showmanship and drama, her songs ranging from jazzy country to folk to Americana and pop, and honest portrayals of trailer parks and pills, confinement and release. She and Fred bring out the best in each other's art and this will be a night to remember.

Driftwood (7:00 PM)
Caffe Lena at The Grove at Neumann, 233 Lake Avenue Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
From the same fertile region that produced Upstate New York's Old Crow Medicine Show and The Horseflies comes Driftwood, a band with a rock n' roll soul and a folk art mind. Carving out a name for themselves with electrifying live performances, they are lighting up the mics throughout the Americana universe at top festivals, clubs and on radio (Mountain Stage, Sirius XM). Drawing on Old-time recordings to 1960's R&B, the music is crafted to serve the songs with upright bass, banjo, acoustic guitar and violin. The group's stage dynamics are as captivating as the songs. "I give so much of myself when I play because I deem it necessary in order to do the music justice", says Byrne, whose violin-shredding performances galvanize fans. "There's a reason people won't let them off the stage", says Jess Novak from The Syracuse New Times.

From Jon: In 1999, Ted MacKenzie (Drums), Mike Novakowski (Guitar), and I (Organ) got together for the first time as a trio. In the ensuing years the group has done a variety of gigs with local singers and horn players in the Albany/Saratoga area. We play a wide range of tunes, including compositions by Theolonius Monk, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Smith (Of Course), and Jaco Pastorious. In the group, besides myself are two of the best musicians in the Northeast. Mike Novakowski is an incredible jazz guitarist who brings together some of the best parts of Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Herb Ellis, and Kenny Burrell. What can I say about Ted MacKenzie, except that he is one of the most knowledgable, passionate, and musical drummers with whom I have ever played.

He currently performs original songs and arrangements for his instrumental trio, TN3.

The band: TN3 mixes elements of jazz, rock and electronics, playing original songs and new arrangements of unusual covers, including pop, folk and gospel and any other genre signified by the muse. The music of TN3 is improvisational but not noise; exploratory in texture and sound but melodic; arranged but open-ended; structured while embracing the random; aware of the past without repeating it; unafraid of space, subtlety or beauty, and it rocks.

The 200-mile Ragnar Relay Adirondacks kicks off in Saratoga Springs where runners are immediately immersed by the beauty of upstate New York.

Teams of 12 (or 6) head north and experience views of Saratoga Lake, the Hudson River and simple countryside. At appropriately named Million Dollar Beach (Lake George) runners find a place to sleep (?), relax, swim, and admire the sunset with friends. Lit-up vans, costumes and a billion stars overhead come together to create an unforgettable night run that you can only experience at Ragnar. Special to this race, those who tackle the hardest leg on the course up Tongue Mountain will be rewarded with extra Ragnar bling.

On Saturday, the whisper of crisp air fills your lungs as you run through the golden light of Aspen trees and up the southern side of Lake Champlain. Your team will finish like champions at Lake Placid, the home of two Winter Olympic Games. Discover what it means to find your inner wild on Sept. 23-24.
